The Myth of Atlantis

By Don Peavy Sr.

Human cultures have always imagined a time and place in which human civilization was at its finest and highest level of achievement. Such imaginings have come in the visions of the Garden of Eden, Shangri-La, Camelot, and many others. Can it be that somewhere in time, at some distant indeterminate place human civilization reached a zenith of paradise proportions? Yes, answers Edgar Cayce, "America's Greatest Psychic," as reported by his son, Edgar Evans Cayce, in the latter's fascinating and insightful book, "Edgar Cayce On Atlantis" (Under the Editorship of Hugh Lynn Cayce, NY: Warner Books 1968).

Edgar Evans culls information from scores of "readings" given by his father over a period of some twenty years between 1924 and 1944. For those who are not familiar with Edgar Cayce, the Preface to the book gives a vivid snapshot. A more detailed portrait is painted in the insightful work, "The Story of Edgar Cayce: 'There Is A River',"by Thomas Sugrue, 1997, 1942, A.R.E. Press. Additional and updated information can be found at the Cayce Foundation website.

The Myth of Atlantis was first seared into human consciousness by Plato in the Fifth Century B.C.E. According to Evans' report, Atlantis was said by Plato to be "a large island in the Atlantic which sank in a volcanic catastrophe some nine thousand years previously." Edgar Cayce's readings indicate that what Plato reported was the last phase of the destruction of Atlantis. Expanding Plato's account, the psychic's readings indicate that people existed on Atlantis as far back as 10 million years B.C.E. And soon was inhabited by the Sons of the Law of One - spiritual beings; and the Sons of Belial who abandoned their spiritual existence for materiality - eventually creating "things or slaves." Evans speculates that these things may have been part human and part animal.

It was due to the conflict between the Sons of the Law of One and the Sons of Belial that the first destruction of the world and parts of Atlantis happened some time before 50,000 B.C.E. The second destruction occurred around 28,000 B.C.E. when Atlantis was broken up into several islands. The final devastation came as described by Plato when Atlantis sank to the bottom of the Atlantic and disappeared.

Atlantis was a highly advanced civilization. Evans reports that according to many of the readings of Edgar Cayce, Atlantis:

1. Had instruments similar to laser or maser;
2. Had electricity and probably atomic power;
3. Its people could travel by air; and
4. Its people could travel underwater.

Ultimately, it was the misuse of this technology which led to the demise of Atlantis and which offers the strongest argument why modern inhabitants of planet earth ought to be concerned with the rise and fall of Atlantis. Evans argues that "In the last fifty years there has been more scientific advancement than in all recorded history." However, despite these advances, the "things" of Atlantis "have returned to haunt the world in the underprivileged, uneducated, uncared-for masses of humanity." Like the people of Atlantis, we have amassed vast degrees of power which we have thus far chosen to use for destruction rather than for the good of all humanity.

Atlantis offers a pattern for what is happening in the world today. Whether or not one believes in reincarnation, one thing is quite clear according to Evans, "The urges, talents, and abilities of Atlanteans are manifested in individuals today." Consequently, "the future of our nation [and the world] will probably be determined by the ideals of its citizens and their attitudes toward one another." This statement is most prophetic, if not an indictment, given that the majority of the world's conflicts are caused and fueled by differences of person and belief. Like our forbears, the Atlanteans, we are fighting our way along the road of destruction.

What Evans hopes will be achieved in part in writing his book is for all of the world's people to awaken to the truth that If humanity, "on a national and individual level - can become aware of [humanity's] true nature [as a spiritual being and child of God] and ... relationship to God [humanity] may be able to avoid repeating past mistakes."

Evans writes with a flair of optimism even though his book was written in the same year as the deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, as well as the raging conflict in Vietnam. He leaves no doubt that while Atlantis offers a prophecy of doom for us if we continue on our present course, Atlantis also offers us opportunity and hope. The choice rests with us which future we will choose.

In addition to the question why we should care about Atlantis, the other question which emerges from the book is why should we believe the readings of Edgar Cayce? Evans does not shy away from this question. On the contrary, he embraces the question and offers a persuasive array of evidence to prove the reliability of other Cayce Readings and argues by analogy that if Cayce was right on so many other geological, archaeological, and other matters, then most probably Cayce is right about Atlantis.

Perhaps. Given the number of readings given by Edgar Cayce, over 2,500, the law of large numbers holds that some of the readings are bound to be proven true. Moreover, as is the case with most prophetic utterances, the truth often lies in the interpretation. Nevertheless, "Edgar Cayce on Atlantis" is well worth the cost and the time needed to read the book. In the midst of wars and rumors of wars and a faltering world economy, we need all the help we can get.

Sleepytime Secrets Review

By Letitia Pope.

"Sleepytime Secrets" by Janet Brownlee is a good overall resource for all parents. This book was written for any parent struggling with your child's sleeping issues or an expectant parent searching for information about children's sleeping habits. This book was a invaluable resource. I would recommend to this book to others. I was consistently having problems with my child not sleeping and waking up throughout the night. I was skeptical and doubtful this book would put an end to my child's sleepless nights. After much thought, I came to the conclusion I had nothing to lose because my current methods were not working. I was pleasantly surprised at the vast amount of information supplied in this guide. It was an informative and easy to use guide. I immediately implemented the techniques and bedtime no longer a showdown, but a peaceful and restful night for the whole family.

This book outlined step-by-step how to get your child to sleep. The whole experience was written to be fun and enjoyable for you and your child. It dealt with several child sleep issues:

  • dealing with common sleep disorders in children.
  • proven techniques to help your child sleep easy and fast.
  • breaks down into detail the sleeping patterns from newborns to adults.
  • bedtime refusal and resistance techniques that work.
  • methods for getting your child to sleep in his or her own bed.
  • ways to deal with your child's night fears.

Most importantly, this book incorporates reading into your nightly bedtime routine. This was the most enjoyable part for my daughter ever night at bedtime. Every technique works as promised to achieve your desired result.

This guide was a very good resource. The cost I invested in this guide was minimal compared to the enormous benefits I received from this guide. My child is sleeping though the night, I enjoy time to myself, quiet undisturbed evenings with my husband and everyone in the family enjoys well rested and peaceful nights of uninterrupted sleep.

New York Times Number One Seller Makes Amazing History

By Juan Marquez.

The number one seller list, for the New York Times is considered one of the highest honors any author has the liberty of achieving. With many authors in contention, makes this achievement, even that more prestigious. The realism of this, is that the authors and books are reviewed by many, and promoted by book stores and advertised by news stations, local and national media for maximum exposure. After weeks and months of review, the authors and their books are rated by the amount of book sales that they have made, and are rated accordingly.

There are different categories such as fiction, non-fiction, childrens books, mysteries and so forth, so getting to number one in anyone of these categories, is a major accomplishment as you may agree. Recently we have made our own research study and have come to realize, that history is in the making as we speak. This book, has been number one, for ten of the last eleven weeks, and has been considered by many as a great American saga. The tyranny of this historic climb to number one is simply amazing. How can a number one book seller rank that high without the normal media exposure that generally is given, when a book reaches a remarkable sales threshold?

This book has been getting so much attention, and most has been through word of mouth and some radio stations. What is this book about, and how can it demand such an enormous amount of attention from the consumers?

The book "Liberty and Tyranny" by Mark Levin, represents the principles and the code of ethics, that have been handed down through generations. The principles that we share as fellow Americans, is what keeps and bonds our great nation together. This explains the monumental response and rave reviews, that this book has been manufacturing.

Reading That Values Your Time, Money and Energy

By Inda Hanum Samsi.

The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read. -Mark Twain

Do you read? I bet you do. I do too. But do you have to struggle to read or you find it easy to keep up with today's best-sellers that come into the market one after another?

Have you ever been in situations where you find yourself getting bored of reading because it took you so long to finish a book that you can't wait to switch to another books with new themes and ideas?

True, some people do have the skills to speed read that they can finish reading a book within a few hours (and are still able to grasp the whole idea of the book like sponge absorbing water!) but as for me unfortunately, reading a book can take hours, weeks and sometimes months!

It is a widely known fact that knowledge equal power. Your capability to learn, comprehend and apply success principles that you pick up from reading is vital to help manage and maneuver your life in today's demanding world.

So, how do we tackle this problem of wanting to gain so much knowledge but lacking the skills to read in speed? To add to that, our time is limited to be spent too much on a book (or at least we thought so...).

The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it. -James Bryce

One of the best available alternatives is to read a good summary of a book that contains the skills and ideas that you wish to become expert at and gain knowledge of. Nevertheless, one may argue that summaries do not equal to reading the book itself. They tend to dismiss some of the ideas of a book, they argue. But do you know that not all parts of a book are of identical value and significance? In every book, there are always filler materials. Have you been in a state where you needed to finish reading a book (eg; reading for a class) in a few hours and you ended up reading the back of the cover, the table of contents and then you go straight to the chapter where you thought the main idea is going to be illustrated and detailed out? And once done with that particular chapter while chasing time, you just skimmed through the rest of the book. It is like being in a long talk and you wish that you could just fast forward the talk because you already knew (after reading the outline or abstract) what the talk is going to be about and you do not fancy spending hours listening to things you are already familiar with - the same goes with reading.

No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance. -Confucius.

If the idea is still new to you, let me be the one to introduce it - reading good summaries of books can save your time, money as well as your energy (don't you agree that being bored can take up a lot of our energy?).

But the question is, where do we find good summaries of books? So, in case you have not noticed, there are already a lot of sites and companies that offer book summaries. Their reading experts do the laborious reading job for you and then come up with summarized versions of the books with important points, information and ideas clearly laid out in just a few pages. You will be able to read dozens of books in less time! This will as a result, help you stay updated with the latest self-help advice that you can apply to advance your life and work.

Yes, subscribing to these providers will definitely cost you (a few bucks at least if not more) money but isn't a wise man's money in his head, not in his heart? But it will definitely take less from your pocket than when buying the books themselves. What a deal - money, time and also energy!

You can have all the channels on your television and listen to all kinds of music that are available on the internet but those will not substitute for reading. With the advent of countless educational technologies, reading is still ranked as the most crucial routine that everyone must have to acquire knowledge. Plus, as we get busier and busier with life, time isn't something that we want to play around with. So, let us all live a life of a perpetual reader. Have we forgotten the famous saying of Thomas Jeferson? "I cannot live without books!"

The time you think you're missing, misses you too. -Ymber Delecto

Book Clubs Online - Finding the Right Book Club For You

By Michelle Rudge.

Do you find yourself wanting to join a book club but unable to find one close to your home? That doesn't need to be a problem anymore, there are now many book clubs online and you can find one that suits your own particular interests and reading style.

It's hard to define when the 'book club' as we know it was first established. Certainly such phenomenons as Oprah's Book Club on TV and Karen Joy Fowler's novel, The Jane Austen Book Club have helped to popularise the notion of a group of people meeting together to discuss books that they have read.

Book clubs that meet in person have taken on two main ways of operating.

  • One is where each member will read a book of their choice and when they meet together each member will talk about the book they have read. Often members swap books that are of particular interest.
  • Other book clubs will nominate a book to be read prior to the next meeting, and when they meet up again the group focusses on discussing the book. Discussion can revolve around whether a person liked a book or not, what they think the author was trying to portray, what they learnt from the book as a whole or from individual characters.

But for book clubs online, having each member read the same book is the better option as it is easier to facilitate an online discussion if everyone is on the same topic. Of course the dynamics of an online book club are quite different to a real world book club, for a start there's no great food and wine to share! But if everyone is on the same topic a forum discussion or comments on a blog post will be much easier to follow and add to.

The great thing about book clubs online is that you can 'shop' around for a group that suits your needs. You may want to be in a group that are in the same situation as you, such as: retired, ex-pat's, men-only, mom's only or over 50's. Also, you may be interested only in a particular genre such as mystery, crime, romance or biography. Another factor to consider is how often the book club 'meets' and how quickly you will need to read the book.

The one thing you won't have to worry about, is where the group meets! Book clubs online are fast becoming a very popular option for people who are very busy, house-bound or live in remote areas.

Click here for a list of different book clubs online, see which one suits you and join them. I know you'll be glad you did.

What Are the Contents of a Book Review?

By Murali Ramesh.

A book review gives an idea about the contents in a book. It presents the idea and information that has been given by the author. A critical book review does an analysis on the strengths and weakness of the book. It discusses the topics in the book that could have been made better. Review can either be encouraging or discouraging. Some review can make or break the sales of a book based on the content.

A good book review will also give a brief assessment of the author's writing capabilities and how he manages to keep the reader engrossed. A brief background of the author is also provided and discussions of his previous works are also presented. His credentials and area of expertise can also be discussed.

The first area to be considered in a review is the subject of the work and the broad field and/or genre in which the book fits. Comparisons may be drawn to similar genre of books. A book review can either be a comprehensive overview or a detailed analysis. In most cases the purpose of writing the book is analyzed. A book should meet the objectives it intends to achieve by striking a chord with the readers. If at the end the book achieves its objective that the author intends to communicate with the reader than the book can be expected to achieve a positive review. The final assessment ends with either a buy or skip recommendation.

Writing reviews is consumes a lot of time and a thankless job. In most cases the reviewer might ask why I write them. But the ultimate aim should be to make the writings of the review enjoyable by everyone. "Writing crystallizes thought" should be the motto of the reviewer. The book reviews are a way of reflecting on the book and putting some of my ideas on the work in order maybe for future reference.
Some tips to writers of book review are:

  • Make notes while reading through important passages in a book. Have clear idea has to what are the contents in the book you intend to highlight
  • Readers of the book review are generally people who want to buy the book. So put the message across subtly in the final assessment.
  • Mention the name of the author and title clearly at the beginning of the book review.
  • Mention about the parts in the book you liked or disliked.
  • A good review should express the reviewer's opinion and persuade the reader to share it, to read the book, or to avoid reading it.
Some interesting book reviews can be found on the internet.
